History Of Werabe City

Different information sources indicate that before 1958 E.C Werabe little was a village and a rural town, there were no social institutions and the number of people living in the village was very few. Therefore, it can be known that the local resident used to travel to Butajera and Zuwai cities for education, health and administrative matters. However, in 1958 E.C, King Haile Selassie had the opportunity to visit Werabe even for a short time. This happened because they came to visit the Alemgena-Butajera-Hosaena-Sodo road that was under construction. At that time, the residents of the area expressed their respect and appreciation to the king, and the king laid the foundation stone for the construction of a primary school in the premises of the now Warabe 2nd and Preparatory School for the warm welcome given to them by the local residents and the respect shown to them by the community.

In S/N/N/P/R Werabe city is one of the reform cities in the government and it was chosen as the capital of the zone following the referendum on the identity of the Siltie ethnic group held on April 23, 1993 E.C. Since 1998 E.C, the city has been managed as a city administration.  Before Warabe was chosen as the administrative seat of Siltie Zone, there was no situation to consider it as a city except for some tin houses. However, it was chosen as the capital city of the zone due to its presence in the average position of the districts under the Silte zone and its importance to the economic and cultural development of the zone in the future. According to the master plan made since 2006 E.C, Werabe organized city is located in category 2 in 3 kebeles in 09 ketena in 28 neighborhoods and 146 blocks.
